‘Dear You’ Leads Post-Holiday Frame

Jinant Film & TV’s family drama “Dear You” ascended to the top spot at the China box office during the May 8–10 weekend, earning RMB62.6 million ($9.2 million), according to data from Artisan Gateway.

Released on April 30 as part of the May Day holiday slate, the film has now reached a cumulative total of $20.1 million. Directed by Lan Hongchun and starring Li Sitong and Wang Yantong, the story centers on Grandma Ye Shurou, a woman from the Chaoshan region whose quiet twilight years are upended when her debt-ridden grandson, Xiaowei, travels to Thailand to find his rumored billionaire grandfather. The search uncovers a hidden love affair spanning half a century, revealing that the person Grandma had been exchanging letters with for decades was a stranger.

Zhonghe Qiancheng’s suspense thriller “Vanishing Point” moved to second place, adding $8.2 million for a cumulative total of $51.3 million. Directed by Cheng Wei-hao and starring Zheng Kai and Liu Haocun, the adaptation of the novel “Sea Anemone” explores a series of chilling secrets within a residential compound, triggered by the mysterious disappearance of a child on the winter solstice.

“Cold War 1994” secured third place, taking in $4.3 million to push its total to $36.2 million. Produced by Edko Films and directed by Longman Leung, the Hong Kong police prequel features a cast led by Daniel Wu and Terrance Lau. Set in the years preceding the handover, the film details the early power struggles and systemic corruption within the police force that set the stage for the original franchise.

“The Devil Wears Prada 2” held the fourth spot, earning $1.4 million for a cumulative total of $13 million.

Rounding out the top five, New Line Cinema’s martial arts fantasy “Mortal Kombat II” debuted with $1.3 million.

The market experienced a standard post-holiday contraction following the surge of the May Day period, with Mainland China’s overall weekend grosses reaching $27.3 million, while the 2026 year-to-date revenue stands at $2.05 billion, down 47.5% from the same period in 2025.
