Lío Mehiel (“Mutt,” “After the Hunt”) and Emily Carey (“House of the Dragon”) are set to star in “Camino,” a neo-Western feature from Beso and Pucci Productions that will be introduced at the Cannes Market this week via Breaking Through the Lens.
Written and directed by Annabella Fazio in her feature debut, “Camino” is described as a “lyrical, tactile neo-Western exploring themes of identity, masculinity and escape, set against the backdrop of a gritty Western,” according to a press release.
Mehiel is set for the role of Ifa, a cowboy navigating identity and survival, while Carey will portray Ellie, a mosaic artist bound to a fading ranch. “The story follows the pair as they journey across the badlands, forging a volatile connection where devotion and betrayal begin to blur,” the release continues.
Mehiel first broke out in the acclaimed Sundance titles “Mutt” and “In the Summers,” and went on to appear in Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt.” Carey, meanwhile, held a leading role in Netflix’s “Geek Girl” and currently stars in “House of the Dragon,” in which they play young Alicent Hightower.
The project is being developed and co-produced by Fazio and Sofia Kunz’s Beso Productions and Emily Sky Hickin’s Pucci Productions, which recently premiered “Bearcave” at Venice and the Lena Dunham-executive produced short “Notice Me” at BFI Flare Festival. The film is a Breaking Through the Lens competition finalist and marks a key title for both companies’ slates with a focus on international, auteur-driven storytelling and emerging voices.
“’Camino’ exists beyond time in a world where dust storms and folklore feel equally real,” Kunz said in a statement. “As the first project in our slate, it captures our commitment to elevating underrepresented voices and championing stories with a bold, singular vision.”
Added Hickin: “’Camino’ is a screenplay that will capture the imagination of international audiences. Set in Spain and exploring masculinity, it feels especially timely and important to bring to life.”
Emmy-winning executive producer Theodora Dunlap (“Farewell Amor,” “The Independent”) is also attached to the project. Callo is providing continued development and packaging support, while Jade Risser has supported as line producer in early development.
Mehiel is represented by Paradigm, Lighthouse and Imprint. Carey is represented by Curtis Brown.
