Michael B. Jordan has landed the lead role in I Am Legend 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2007 sci-fi thriller that starred Will Smith. Warner Bros. is developing the project with Steven Caple Jr. set to direct.
The news broke when PopBase shared the announcement on social media. The entertainment account revealed that Caple Jr., who directed Creed II, would helm the sequel. Original screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is also returning to write the script.
The original I Am Legend followed Will Smith’s character as seemingly the last man alive in New York City after a virus wiped out most of humanity. Smith played a scientist searching for a cure while battling infected mutants called Darkseekers. The film was a massive hit, earning over $585 million worldwide.
Steven Caple Jr. brings solid credentials to the director’s chair. He stepped in for Ryan Coogler on Creed II and delivered a crowd-pleasing sequel that earned $214 million globally. Before that, he made his feature debut with The Land, an indie drama that premiered at Sundance. His work on Creed II showed he could handle both intimate character moments and big-budget action sequences.
Akiva Goldsman’s return is particularly interesting. He adapted Richard Matheson’s novel for the 2007 film and has since become a major player in Hollywood. Goldsman won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind and has worked on everything from I Am Legend to The Dark Tower. His involvement suggests Warner Bros. wants to maintain some connection to the original’s tone and themes.
For Jordan, this represents another major franchise opportunity. The Black Panther star has been selective about his blockbuster choices since his Marvel debut. He’s focused primarily on the Creed films and smaller passion projects like Fruitvale Station. I Am Legend 2 would be his first solo lead in a big-budget sci-fi franchise.
Jordan has proven he can carry action films. His work in Black Panther showcased his ability to blend dramatic acting with superhero spectacle. The Creed movies demonstrated his commitment to physical transformation and emotional storytelling. Those skills should translate well to the post-apocalyptic world of I Am Legend.
The sequel faces some interesting storytelling challenges. The original film had multiple endings, with the theatrical version showing Smith’s character sacrificing himself. An alternate ending kept him alive, which opens different possibilities for continuing the story. It’s unclear how Jordan’s character will connect to Smith’s Robert Neville or if this will be a completely fresh take.
There’s also the question of tone. The 2007 film balanced genuine scares with blockbuster action, but it leaned heavily into Smith’s charismatic performance. Jordan brings a different energy that could shift the sequel in new directions.
Warner Bros. hasn’t announced a release date yet. With Goldsman writing and Caple Jr. attached to direct, the project seems to be in early development. Jordan’s schedule will likely determine the timeline, given his commitments to other projects.
The I Am Legend sequel represents a smart move for all involved. Jordan gets a potential franchise to lead, Caple Jr. gets his biggest directorial opportunity, and Warner Bros. revives a proven property with fresh talent. If they can capture the original’s mix of isolation, action, and hope, this could be the start of something bigger than just one sequel.
