The case for nitrogen neutrality | Science


Human activities such as agricultural fertilization, fossil fuel combustion, and waste management have led to substantial releases of reactive nitrogen, severely disrupting the global nitrogen cycle (1). Current international climate governance primarily focuses on carbon neutrality (2), whereas the synergistic effects of nitrogen pollution have yet to receive comparable attention, making it imperative to integrate “nitrogen neutrality” into the global environmental governance agenda.
