The recent confirmation of human cases of Nipah virus (NiV) infection in India’s West Bengal has reignited debate surrounding the world’s readiness for the next high-impact infectious threat. Although only two laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported since December2025 and no onward transmission has yet been detected (1, 2), the event underscores an uncomfortable truth: Despite the lessons of COVID-19, global preparedness for rare but deadly zoonoses remains fragmented and uneven.
