Alec Baldwin posted a birthday message to his brother Stephen Baldwin on Instagram this week. The caption read “Happy birthday Stephen.” That was it.
Three words. That’s what passed between the oldest and youngest of the Baldwin brothers in public this time around.
The Baldwin family has spent decades in the tabloid spotlight, sometimes by choice and sometimes not. Alec and Stephen are at opposite ends of the four-brother lineup. Daniel and Billy sit in the middle. They’ve all had their moments, but Alec and Stephen are the two who’ve stayed most recognizable to a general audience.
Alec, 68, has had one of the longer runs in Hollywood. He built his reputation in theater first, then made the move to film. The Hunt for Red October in 1990 and Glengarry Glen Ross in 1992 are still two of his best-known credits. His years on 30 Rock as network exec Jack Donaghy kept him relevant well into the streaming era. His recurring impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live during the 2016-to-2020 stretch put him back in front of a massive audience.
The last several years have been harder. The Rust shooting in October 2021 put Alec at the center of one of the most covered stories in Hollywood. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died on set. A gun Alec was holding discharged during filming. Criminal charges followed. The involuntary manslaughter case was dismissed in 2024. The legal process is behind him now, but the story stayed in headlines for years.
Stephen, who turned 60 on Tuesday, took a different path. His most enduring credit is The Usual Suspects from 1995, a film that still holds up. He’s worked steadily in smaller projects since. He’s been open about his Christian faith for years, and it’s shaped a lot of his public identity. Politically, he and Alec have ended up in very different places. Alec is one of the more vocal liberal figures in the entertainment world. Stephen has aligned more with conservative politics. Those differences haven’t always stayed private.
Given all of that, a short public birthday message means something. It doesn’t say much. It does confirm they’re still on speaking terms, at least publicly.
