Alexis Ohanian laid out his two parenting rules on X this week, and they’re refreshingly simple. The Reddit co-founder described what he calls his ‘cheat codes’ for raising daughter DiDi: unlimited LEGOs and unlimited books, each tied to one small condition.
The LEGO rule: DiDi can have as many sets as she wants, but she has to finish the last one first. No half-built set abandoned on a shelf. The book rule works the same way. She can read anything. The only condition is that the previous book has to be done first.
That’s the whole system. And it’s a pretty good one.
Ohanian shared the rules in a post on his verified X account, writing: “Papa has two cheat codes: 1. Unlimited LEGOs as long as you finish the last set. 2. Unlimited books as long as you finish the last book.”
He added a sweet bonus. He and DiDi got to visit both a LEGO store and a bookstore on the same day. It reads less like a Saturday errand and more like a perfect afternoon for a curious, creative kid.
The post also came with a playful photo of DiDi inside the LEGO store, striking a pose inspired by a Cristiano Ronaldo LEGO figure. Ohanian tagged the soccer superstar directly in the caption. It made an already adorable moment feel even more fun.
What makes these rules easy to love is how low-pressure they feel. There’s no chart on the wall, no points system. Both rules are built around one simple idea: finish what you started, and the next thing you want is already yours. For a parent, that’s a lovely way to build follow-through. It never has to feel like a rule at all.
The finish-first approach also takes care of a common parenting headache. There’s no negotiating, no ‘just one more set’ conversation. The terms are generous and the terms are clear. That combination tends to work well.
Books and LEGOs are also a natural pairing for this family. Alexis Ohanian co-founded Reddit and has built a career around tech and creative investing. His wife, Serena Williams, is widely considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Together, they’ve spoken openly about raising DiDi to be curious and grounded. These two little rules feel very much in the spirit of that.
The post picked up nearly 2,500 likes and 72 retweets on X. It’s a modest but warm response for a simple parenting thought. It shows how much people appreciate a no-fuss approach to raising curious kids.
It’s easy to see why. The rules don’t require any special setup. Most families already have a half-finished book on the nightstand and a LEGO set sitting partly assembled on a shelf. Ohanian’s system just puts a gentle structure around what’s already there.
There’s also something quietly charming about the framing. ‘Cheat codes’ is gamer language, the kind of term a tech founder reaches for naturally. But it fits. These rules feel like a shortcut to something much harder to teach: the patience to see things through.
DiDi is still young, but the combo of building sets and bedtime reads sounds like a wonderful foundation. Give it a few years. She’ll probably have a very full bookshelf and a truly impressive LEGO collection.
The post is a small, warm window into the Ohanian household. No drama, no big news. Just a dad sharing something that’s working, and a daughter doing her best Cristiano Ronaldo impression at a toy store.
