Fabio Wardley lost his WBO world title to Daniel Dubois in Manchester this weekend in an instant heavyweight classic.
Wardley showed incredible heart in the first defeat of his career, shipping extreme punishment at the heavy hands of Dubois before being stopped by the referee in the penultimate round.
The Ipswich man – who scored two knockdowns early – was ground down by the accuracy and power of Dubois, who composed himself after touching the canvas and settled into a more disciplined and punishing performance.
In his first words since the fight, Wardley recognised the significance of the spectacle he and his countryman put on and made sure to thank his loyal fanbase.
“My body failed me, but not my heart. And that I can live with… Congratulations Daniel Dubois, thank you for a great fight worthy of the history books. Thank you to the city of Manchester and everyone that has been along on this journey with me.”

Though he provided no update on his recovery, those close to the former heavyweight champion have confirmed that he is home with family following stitches at the arena and a visit to the hospital.
A rematch clause has been confirmed, giving Wardley an immediate return fight if he wants it. However, boxing fans would much rather see him recuperate fully before making any fight plans.
If the second fight is not to be, or perhaps comes down the line, there are plenty of intriguing options for Dubois, not least Moses Itauma, who, as per the WBO President Gustavo Olivieri, is likely to soon be called as mandatory challenger.
