Lil Mama showed up to The Chi Season 8 premiere in New York City this week and didn’t hold back on how she felt about it.
The rapper and actress posted photos from the event on Instagram, crediting photographer @missdany__ for the shots. Her caption thanked “the creator, actors and influencers who made the night magical” and wrapped up with a plain statement: she had a blast.
The Chi airs on Showtime and streams on Paramount+. It’s heading into its eighth season now. Set in Chicago’s South Side, the series first aired in January 2018. Creator Lena Waithe built it around a group of residents dealing with everyday life in one of Chicago’s most storied neighborhoods – the wins, the losses, and everything in between. The show earned a reputation early on for telling Black stories without softening them. Eight seasons later, that reputation has held up.
Lil Mama has been part of that world. Born Niatia Kirkland, she first broke through in 2007 with “Lip Gloss.” The song placed her firmly in the pop-culture conversation almost overnight. In the years since, she’s built out a career well beyond music. Acting has taken up more of her time, and The Chi has been one of the more notable stops on that path. Her presence at this kind of industry event says something real about that connection.
Seeing her at a Season 8 premiere isn’t a stretch. This wasn’t a random red carpet appearance. She’s tied to the show.
The NYC event brought together cast, creators, and influencers for what sounds like a proper send-off into the new season. New York has become a reliable spot for Showtime premiere events. The Chi has a dedicated enough audience to make those evenings feel like something more than a promotional stop.
Lil Mama’s post didn’t get into specifics about Season 8’s story or her role in the new episodes. It was more of a thank-you than an announcement. The enthusiasm seemed real, though. “I Love You All” isn’t what you write about a room you’re glad to have left.
The Chi has quietly become one of the more consistent dramas on cable. It flies under the radar compared to bigger prestige titles. But it earns it. The writing has stayed grounded, the cast has stayed committed, and the show hasn’t lost focus the way long-running series often do.
Eight seasons is a real achievement for any drama. Long-time viewers have plenty to look forward to. New viewers have a lot of catching up ahead of them.
The Chi Season 8 is available on Showtime and Paramount+.
