Blind box culture exacerbates plastic waste | Science

The global blind box market, in which consumers buy collectible figurines without knowing which figurine is in which box, has expanded at extraordinary speed. China’s designer toy industry alone is projected to exceed US$15 billion in retail sales by 2026—a more than 15-fold increase since 2015 (1). The global collectible figurine market is forecast to reach US$49 billion by 2034, up from US$26 billion in 2023 (2). Blind boxes derive their appeal from the randomized reveal of collectible figurines, an approach that drives repeat purchasing and high product turnover. Because this consumption model inherently amplifies material throughput and waste generation, regulatory frameworks should address the end-of-life management of blind box figurines.
